The Atmosphere of Miss Katies Crab Shack is reminecnt of those little coastal cafes you dream of escaping to. Fishing nets, bouys and a large plastic shrimp are contrasted with the Public Bars, rock and roll dive bar vibe, but strangley the combination works for a relaxed lunch or dinner on the city fringe. 

The Crab Shack that operates seven days a week out of the pokey little kitchen at North Melbourne’s The Public Bar. Miss Katie - or Katie Marron – is an twenty something chef, who has worked in the kitchens of Movida. The Americana menu however, was inspired by the recipes of Katie’s mother and grandma. Cooking from her grandmothers handwritten recipies the sassy southern fried chicken and cobb salad are make an awesome start to a feast of down home American cooking. To accompany the chicken is plethora of hot sauces, ketchups and mustards but our pick is Miss Katies secret Sailor Jerrys BBQ sauce, smokey and spiked with rum if we could we would take a bath in it!

The Public Bar’s proximity to the Queen Victoria Markets has supreme advantages to the preparation and specialisation of her food. Miss Katie buys the ingredients daily, Highlighting the qaulity of the fresh seafood is Katie’s Low Country Boil. Handed down from Katie’s mum who is from Gibson Island, Maryland, The crab boil consists of a blue swimmer crab, corn cob, smoked kranski, Old Bay and garlic butter. Get hands on with these critters: your amour is a wooden mallet, a bamboo crab picker and a plastic bib! Your table, lined with newspaper, acts as a giant napkin and with food this tasty who cares how uncouth your manners are at the table!
