DESIGNING 007

50 YEARS OF BOND STYLE

The year is 1962, it is a year when Ringo Starr replaces Pete Best as drummer of the Beatles, Marilyn Monroe is found dead in her bed and ‘Dr No’ the first James Bond film premieres in cinemas. To mark the 50th anniversary of the movie franchise London’s Barbican Centre has opened an exhibition showcasing Bond style over the decades.

"Designing 007 – Fifty years of Bond style" displays the costume finery from the who’s who of the fashion world including Givenchy, Armarni, Versace, Brioni, Roberto Cavalli, Tom Ford, Gucci and Prada alongside the creations of Hollywood costume designers. Gadgets, weapons and props of the villains and heros over the years will also be on display at the exhibition running till the start of September.

Highlights to spy as you wonder through the Barbican include the Jaws’s metal teeth and the white bikini that Ursula Andress emerged from the surf wearing, a bikini that sparked sales frenzy as the swimwear item was finally embraced by women the world over.  So whether you think Sean, Roger, Pierce or Daniel is the better Bond a visit to London’s Barbican Centre will have you rushing home for a Bond movie marathon, just so that you can revisit the sartorial moments over the last 50 years on the silver screen.
